Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho expressed frustration after his team’s 1-0 defeat to Real Betis on Friday at La Cartuja, attributing the loss to what he called his players’ “naivety” compared to their more streetwise opponents.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Mourinho pointed to early incidents where he felt Betis players escaped bookings, while his own side remained upright and honest.
“In the first minute, there was a clear yellow card on a player who fouled Valverde. A minute later, another yellow for a foul on Vinicius,” Mourinho said. “But our players get up immediately, while Betis players are smarter. With the support of a great crowd pushing and pressing, they achieve these things.”
Clarifying ‘Naive’
When a journalist asked if he meant his team was too simple or innocent, and whether he could add more experience, Mourinho clarified his remarks.
“No… maybe I explained myself badly. The team worked very hard, and I have nothing to blame any player for; they gave everything,” he said. “By naive or innocent, I mean specific clear situations, like simple yellow cards—for example, a stamp on the foot. That’s a clear yellow.”
He elaborated: “In the first minute, there was a stamp on Fede Valverde’s foot, and he stayed on his feet… That’s something to be proud of as a Real Madrid captain, and I applaud him for it. But to give you an example from the other side: that lad (a Betis player) who was lying down, looking as if he had died in front of our bench… I thought the medics would come to carry him off, but in the end, no ambulance was needed!”
Mourinho concluded: “That’s what I mean. When you play against teams with that kind of culture and mentality, it works against you.”
