Relatives have confirmed the deaths of four family members following a small aircraft crash off the coast of the Bahamas. The plane, a Piper PA-34, went down approximately 15 miles from Andros Island on Monday after departing from Great Harbour Cay.
Details of the Incident
The aircraft was en route to Miami with four people aboard when it crashed. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the plane took off around 11:15 a.m. local time. Flight tracking data indicates the aircraft encountered stormy conditions before reversing course, shortly before the crash.
Victims Identified
The family identified the pilot as 80-year-old Mario Lamar, a lifelong and experienced pilot. Also on board were his wife, 79-year-old Lili Lamar, and two of their grandchildren, 28-year-old Sofia Sosa and 22-year-old Christian Sosa. The family had spent a long weekend together at the pilot’s apartment in the Bahamas.
Search and Recovery Efforts
The U.S. Coast Guard, in coordination with the Royal Bahamas Defense Force, initiated a search but had to pause due to adverse weather. Relatives, however, continued their own search efforts using private vessels. The family reported that they located the deceased and brought them aboard their boats. They are now working with the U.S. Coast Guard to repatriate the remains.
Family’s Plea and Gratitude
Earlier, the family had made an emotional plea for help, asking fishermen and other boaters to assist in the search. After the recovery, they expressed gratitude for the support received. The mother of the two grandchildren had alerted authorities after failing to hear from her children upon their expected arrival.
The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss and arrange for the return of their loved ones.
