Camp Nou is set to open a new chapter in its European history after UEFA officially selected the Barcelona stadium to host the 2029 Champions League final. The biggest club match in Europe will return to the Catalan venue after a 30-year absence.
The 2029 final will be the third time Camp Nou has hosted the showpiece, following the 1989 and 1999 editions. The latter remains etched in football memory as one of the most dramatic and thrilling finals in the competition’s history.
The Historic Milan Night
The first time was on 24 May 1989, when Camp Nou hosted the European Cup final between AC Milan and Steaua Bucharest.
The match turned into a dominant display by Milan under coach Arrigo Sacchi, as they crushed their opponents 4-0 in front of around 97,000 spectators. The Dutch duo Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten each scored twice.
That victory was a highlight in Milan’s golden era, and they retained the trophy the following season.
1999: An Unforgettable Comeback
But the final on 26 May 1999 is the most famous of all the finals hosted at Camp Nou.
Bayern Munich took an early lead through Mario Basler and remained ahead until the closing minutes, even squandering several chances to extend their lead. Manchester United seemed destined to leave Barcelona defeated.
However, everything changed in stoppage time. Teddy Sheringham equalised, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær scored the winner moments later, securing a historic 2-1 victory and the title for United. It is one of the most famous comebacks in Champions League history. Sir Alex Ferguson described it as the greatest moment of his life, and the English club completed a historic treble that season.
Barcelona’s Harsh Paradox
Notably, the two teams involved in that historic night were the very reason Barcelona, the host club, were denied the dream of playing the final on their own pitch.
In the 1998-1999 group stage draw, Barcelona were placed in a tough group alongside Bayern Munich and Manchester United. The Catalan club failed to advance to the knockout stages, while the two giants progressed and eventually met at Camp Nou. UEFA records confirm that Barcelona exited in the group stage, while Bayern and United reached the final, with the latter winning it in the closing minutes.
Thirty years after that night, the final returns to Camp Nou in 2029. This time, Barcelona will hope not only to be hosts but also to reach the final and give their fans the chance to see their team compete for the trophy on home soil.
