Huawei has introduced its latest tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, in the Chinese market. This third-generation tri-fold device shows a clear shift toward design philosophies popularized by Samsung, particularly in its folding mechanism and privacy-focused display technology.
Inward-Folding Design for Better Protection
The Mate XT 2 features an inward-folding design from both sides, similar to the approach Samsung used in its Galaxy Z TriFold. When closed, the 10.2-inch flexible display folds inward, shielding the sensitive screen surfaces from scratches and impacts—a notable improvement over the first-generation model.
Huawei’s original Mate XT Ultimate Design, launched in China in late 2024, used an accordion-style layout where parts of the screen remained exposed even when folded. The second-generation Mate XTs kept that same structure. With the Mate XT 2, Huawei has moved to a fully inward-folding mechanism, aligning more closely with industry trends.
Privacy Screen Inspired by Samsung
One of the standout additions is an OLED display with an optional privacy-enhancing feature, reminiscent of the technology Samsung introduced in the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
When privacy mode is activated, dedicated pixel elements emit light at narrower angles. This makes the screen content appear nearly dark to people viewing from the side, while the user looking directly at the display sees it clearly. The feature is designed to prevent shoulder-surfing in public settings.
This privacy option is not standard on all models. It is available only on the variant with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, at an additional cost of 1,000 Chinese yuan (about $150).
Hardware and Camera Upgrades
Beyond the display, the Mate XT 2 includes several technical improvements. It is powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro processor. The device also boasts an IP59 rating for water and dust resistance, a step up from many previous foldables.
The rear camera system features a triple-lens setup, aiming to combine the versatility of a tri-fold phone with the imaging capabilities expected from a flagship device.
Pricing and Availability
The Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design starts at approximately $3,000. Huawei has not yet announced a timeline for international release.
The launch comes at a time when Samsung is facing challenges in the tri-fold segment. The company halted sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold shortly after its release, though reports suggest Samsung is developing a new version in this category.
