The English Football Association has formally requested that FIFA President Gianni Infantino provide full disclosure of documents concerning a proposed World Cup investment project. The demand was made by Debbie Hewitt, who serves as a FIFA vice president and member of the FIFA Council, in a letter to Infantino ahead of the council’s scheduled meeting on October 15.
The proposal has encountered widespread opposition within football circles, with UEFA threatening to boycott all FIFA competitions if the project is not abandoned. Hewitt’s requests also include the release of documents related to the decision to suspend the penalty of American forward Folarin Balogun during the 2026 World Cup, a decision that followed a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Infantino.
In August, Infantino apologized for the manner in which the investor involvement project was handled, and the FIFA Council pledged to conduct a review, though it did not specify who would lead it. UEFA has stated it has “lost confidence” in Infantino and has filed legal requests in U.S. courts to obtain documents tied to the project. The European governing body has also committed to selecting a candidate to challenge Infantino in the FIFA presidential election at its congress next March, with the nomination deadline set for November 18. Infantino confirmed earlier this month that he intends to run for re-election.
