Al Ahly and Egypt legend Magdy Abdel Ghani has criticized Hussein Ammouta’s treatment of Ali Mahmoud after the player was substituted during the 1-1 draw with Al Mokawloon in the Egyptian Premier League last Wednesday.
Ali Mahmoud shook hands with Ammouta as he left the pitch, but the gesture did not sit well with the coach, who rebuked the player and pushed him forcefully, creating a scene that sparked widespread debate.
Abdel Ghani: Ammouta Must Understand Egyptians
Speaking on Thursday evening on the program “Masaa Al Anwar” with host Medhat Shalaby on MBC Masr 2, Abdel Ghani said: “I don’t know why Ammouta is angry with us! He must understand the nature of Egyptians. If there were a big star, or if I were in Ali Mahmoud’s place, the matter would not have passed peacefully.”
When asked what he would have done, Abdel Ghani replied: “I would have done what needed to be done. One coach spoke to me inappropriately when I was a player and hit me, so I hit him back.”
Pressure on Coaches and Player Tension
Regarding the pressures Ammouta currently faces, the former Egypt international said: “The coaching profession has a lot of pressure, which is why I did not work in it. A coach must be level-headed, and when you are a guest, you must be polite.”
He continued: “If I went to coach in Morocco, for example, would I express my anger in this way? Also, Ammouta is not facing technical problems and shortcomings, while the players feel tension and pressure—which causes them injuries—as they fear the coach’s outbursts.”
