Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio has been convicted of a road safety offense after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol in Spain. The Spanish newspaper Atlántico Hoy reported that Asensio’s blood alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit, exceeding 0.60 mg/l, which under Spanish law elevates the violation from an administrative infraction to a criminal offense.
Court Ruling and Penalties
Asensio accepted the judgment, and a court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana imposed a fine of €14,400 and suspended his driving license for eight months. The case highlights the serious consequences of drink-driving, especially for public figures.
Separate Legal Proceedings
In a separate matter, Asensio is scheduled to appear before a court in Las Palmas starting Thursday for a three-day hearing. He is one of four defendants, including former players Fran Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez, and Andrés García, facing charges related to the disclosure of secrets, invasion of privacy, and distribution of pornographic material involving minors. The public prosecutor is seeking a prison sentence of two years, six months, and one day, along with a fine.
According to reports, Asensio is not accused of participating in the alleged acts or recording the material, but rather of distributing the images. The prosecution has indicated it may drop the charges if Asensio apologizes to the victims during the trial.
