Following Chelsea’s 6-3 victory over Leeds United in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, a light-hearted exchange took place between Cole Palmer and his teammate Morgan Rogers. Palmer received the man of the match award after scoring Chelsea’s first two goals, prompting Rogers—who provided four assists—to joke with him in front of the cameras: “Man, I made four goals! I can’t believe it, that’s crazy… you only scored a penalty!”
Palmer responded to his teammate by saying: “I started the comeback.”
Rogers didn’t stop there, continuing to poke fun at the decision to give his teammate the award: “That’s crazy… don’t mention my name then, I’m just a spectator here!”
Leeds had taken the lead in the 23rd minute through Tariq Mahrimovitch, before Brenden Aaronson doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 48th minute, leaving Chelsea—who started with a largely reserve lineup—facing a difficult task early in the second half.
However, the Blues responded quickly, as the changes made by coach Xabi Alonso at the start of the second half paid off when he brought on Morgan Rogers, Reece James, Cole Palmer, and Pedro Neto.
Palmer scored a penalty to reduce the deficit in the 53rd minute, then just two minutes later, the same player equalized (2-2). The comeback was completed in the 60th minute when Pedro Neto scored Chelsea’s third goal, before Danny Welbeck added a fourth in the 65th minute.
The visitors didn’t enjoy their consolation goal (4-3) through Dominic Calvert-Lewin for long, as Valentin Barco restored the two-goal lead in the 80th minute by scoring Chelsea’s fifth, before Danny Welbeck completed the rout in the 90+4th minute, scoring his second of the match.
Chelsea had reached the third round of the Carabao Cup after defeating Luton Town 2-0, while Leeds also advanced to the same round with an identical victory over Nottingham Forest.
