Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in the Portugal squad for the first time under new head coach José Jesus, despite previously indicating that the 2026 World Cup would be his last major tournament.
The 41-year-old forward has not yet announced when he plans to retire from international football. He would be 43 by the time UEFA Euro 2028, the next major tournament, takes place.
New Coach, Familiar Face
This is the first squad announced by Jesus, who was appointed to replace Roberto Martínez. Martínez left the Portugal job after the team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the round of 16 at the World Cup.
Jesus, 72, previously coached several Portuguese clubs, including Benfica and Sporting CP. His most recent role was with Saudi side Al Nassr, where he coached Ronaldo and won the league title together last season.
Ronaldo’s International Record
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer with 146 goals. His most notable international achievement was helping Portugal win UEFA Euro 2016.
Upcoming Fixtures
Portugal begin their UEFA Nations League campaign against Wales on 24 September. They then travel to Norway three days later, face Denmark on 1 October, and host Norway again on 4 October.
