Apple has officially introduced its latest professional smartphones, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing significant advancements across camera technology, processing power, and battery endurance. The new devices also feature refined designs aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.
Revolutionary Camera System with Variable Aperture
The new iPhones boast what Apple describes as the most advanced camera system ever in an iPhone. Leading the charge is a 48-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture—a first for iPhones. This feature gives users greater control over depth of field and lighting, with manual options tailored for photographers and professionals.
The variable aperture allows seamless switching between different settings, with four manual aperture levels accessible directly within the camera app. Apple has also provided APIs for developers to integrate this aperture range into their own applications.
Computational photography has been enhanced on the main camera, with updated Photographic Styles offering new controls for texture and grain. Video capabilities have also seen improvements, including the ability to apply cinematic effects after recording at up to 60 frames per second, and 4K Dolby Vision HDR video in the high-frame-rate mode.
Reference Photos for Authenticity
A new feature called Reference Photos aims to prove the authenticity of images captured on the iPhone 18 Pro. A dedicated sensor signs data at the pixel level, converting it into an uneditable reference image. This reference can be displayed alongside the original photo to verify if any alterations have been made.
The system leverages photo metadata and anticipates support for the SynthID standard, helping users identify images that have been generated or modified using AI technologies.
Expanded Dynamic Island
Apple has redesigned the Dynamic Island to offer more space for displaying information. It can now show up to three live activities simultaneously, while retaining its core functions such as Face ID, purchase authentication, and app logins.
A20 Pro Chip: A Leap in Performance and AI
Both models are powered by the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process, with memory bandwidth that is 50% higher than the A19 Pro. The chip includes a new 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU that is up to 40% faster than the previous generation. It also features a new dual neural engine with 16 cores each, totaling 32 cores dedicated to AI processing, delivering twice the AI performance of the A19 Pro.
The phones also incorporate the N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, along with the C2 cellular chip, which offers faster download speeds and 15% lower power consumption compared to the C1X.
Enhanced Thermal Management
To support the A20 Pro, Apple has implemented a new thermal management system featuring a larger vapor chamber, with three times the surface area of the previous generation in the iPhone 17 Pro. This design contributes to up to 40% higher sustained performance.
Longer Battery Life
Battery life has seen substantial improvements. The iPhone 18 Pro (eSIM-only versions) offers up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. Fast charging capabilities allow the iPhone 18 Pro to reach 50% in about 15 minutes via wired charging, or 30 minutes wirelessly. The iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver approximately 7 hours of video playback after just 5 minutes of wired charging.
iOS 27 and Enhanced Usability
The new devices run on iOS 27, which brings improvements in responsiveness, reliability, and ease of use, along with design updates and more customization options for the Liquid Glass appearance. A new feature, Delivery on iPhone, enables users on supported carriers to seamlessly switch between two iPhones using the same phone number.
Pricing and Availability
Some versions of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are eSIM-only, allowing for larger batteries by reclaiming space previously used for physical SIM trays, adding up to two extra hours of video playback. These models are available in markets including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, the United States, Japan, Canada, and Mexico.
Storage options range from 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, to 2TB. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at AED 5,099, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at AED 5,499. Both phones come in four colors: black, silver, dark red, and icy white. Pre-orders begin on September 12, with availability starting September 18.
Apple also introduced a new line of accessories, including silicone cases, shoulder and wrist straps, and knitted fabric wallets, designed to complement the new phone colors.
