Folarin Balogun, the American striker who recently made headlines for his World Cup red card and the subsequent intervention by President Donald Trump, is now at the center of another dispute. This time, the controversy surrounds a collapsed transfer to Everton, with Monaco’s sporting director publicly detailing the events that led to the deal falling through.

Monaco’s Sporting Director Speaks Out

In a press conference, Monaco’s sporting director, Thiago Scuro, revealed the intricacies of the failed £40 million ($54 million) transfer. According to Scuro, Balogun underwent a medical examination at Everton on Tuesday. However, just four hours before the transfer deadline, the English club raised what Scuro described as “illogical” concerns regarding the medical results.

Scuro elaborated, stating, “The player decided not to sign the contracts at the last minute, citing discomfort with how the English club treated him, as well as the medical procedures he underwent at Everton. There were also questions raised about his health status and future.”

Silence from Everton and Balogun

Neither Everton nor Balogun have responded to Scuro’s allegations, leaving the claims unchallenged. This new controversy adds to a growing list of off-field distractions for the New York-born forward, who has been under the spotlight since his performances at the World Cup.

World Cup Red Card and Trump’s Intervention

Balogun’s World Cup journey was marred by a red card during the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The subsequent one-match suspension was, however, lifted by FIFA after President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the possibility of overturning the decision.

This unprecedented intervention allowed Balogun to play in the Round of 16, but he failed to make an impact as the United States were eliminated following a 1-4 defeat to Belgium. The controversial decision to rescind the suspension drew widespread criticism and complaints against FIFA. Balogun himself acknowledged that the controversy created a significant distraction for the USMNT, affecting their performance on the pitch.

Looking Ahead

As Balogun navigates these turbulent times, questions remain about his future at Monaco and his standing within the US national team. The failed transfer and the surrounding allegations have cast a shadow over his career, but the young striker will be eager to put these distractions behind him and focus on his football.
